Spring Competition 2019

Monday 21st January 2019

Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th March Sackville School East Grinstead West Sussex RH19 3TY Why compete? The initial answer is simple; it's a test of your ability in that it highlights if your training endeavours are working or if you may need to push harder. But? What about (inter club) in-house competitions? There needs to be a slightly different approach to these. Not all competitors will have been training for the accolade of a gold medal, some students recognise the opportunity as a safe way to challenge themselves. They may well be competing against students with whom they train weekly; it's also a great opportunity to meet new students. The competitive element is definitely there, but this, I would suggest in in-house competitions, is just an undercurrent. The crucial factor at this particular type of competition is personal growth. The student can gain so much from these experiences; this is where I would like to highlight that the satisfaction of winning a sparring match may not actually be the thing that teaches you the most. Well, what is, you may well ask? During the November 2018 in-house competition, a young female competitor named Sophie caught my eye for her ability to make a personal connection with her only opponent. Her rival was at her first ever competition and was a lower ranking belt. Nowadays when we only have a few teenage girls competing, they are generally matched together. I saw Sophie reassure her opponent and take her time to guide her where necessary. I watched how Sophie congratulated her opponent at each stage - patterns, flying kicks, power and sparring. She had no other person to test her ability but made sure that their day together was the best and memorable for all the right reasons. So why compete? The answer has changed slightly; to challenge yourself in all your strengths and weaknesses, physical, mental and moral. Start with your inter house competitions which will guide you and move you onto to the bigger events - Open Championships, Europeans and the maybe Worlds. But remember how you conduct yourself is always key to your success and will not go unnoticed. Be a winner in all three of the elements - Physical, Mental and Moral. Thank you to Sophie for helping me see this, I have been instructing for 20 years and there is never a time that you stop learning from others regardless of grade, gender, race or religion. Be open to your Taekwon-Do journey. I look forward to seeing new and old competitors at our Spring Competition. We've changed the format slightly so that Teens and Adults come on the Saturday from 3.00pm - watch the video clip below which highlights our adults and teens competing. Don't hesitate to enter, challenge yourself today! Yours in Taekwondo Mrs Simone Hodson Click for more details and to register: ONLINE REGISTRATION…

Senior Master Sahota

Tuesday 27th March 2018
Seminar with the IUTF Technical Director

Seminar with Senior Master Sahota - 7th April 2018 - 2pm till 6pm - Kings Leisure Centre, East Grinstead Senior Master Sahota Started training in Taekwon-do in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire in the summer of 1973, whilst waiting for his CSE Secondary School exam results. At that time the UKTA School was run by Mr Bill McCracken and Mr Bob Howe. When he received his CSE results as the Star Pupil of Park Boys Secondary School, he decided to take on further education in the field of Electronics as an Engineer. At this time, Senior Master Sahota was unaware that his career and life was to be dedicated to Taekwon-do. However, Senior Master Sahota clearly was committed to the art of Taekwon-Do receiving his colour belt promotions and First Degree Black Belt with Grand Master Rhee Ki Ha. However, during this time and due to moving Senior Master Sahota found himself in a location with no Taekwon-Do schools, it was a difficult time, but Senior Master Sahota found a solution and had to travel a 50 mile round trip twice per week. An indication to us at Fortitude Academy of his determination and dedication to attain his First Degree Black Belt. Thereafter he graded with Grand Master Hee Ill Cho from the USA up to 4th Degree. Senior Master Sahota had the absolute privilege to grade under the Father and Founder General Choi Hong Hi to 5th Degree in Ireland and to 6th Degree in Vienna, Austria; receiving complimentary comments from the Founder. Throughout his early Taekwon-Do career Senior Master Sahota has travelled Europe, America, Canada and the Far East attending 18, 3 day International Training Seminars (IIS) with the Founder and 4 IIS with Master Choi Jung Hwa. This is where his interest developed regarding the technical aspects of patterns and he began to translate the teachings of General Choi's ITF Taekwon-Do. To enhance his knowledge further Senior Master Sahota studied academically as a Personal Trainer to combine his teaching with proper training methods. The year 2018 marks the 25th year anniversary of the formation of the UKGT and Senior Master Sahota's 45th year as a student and pioneer of Taekwon-Do. I am sure that you will join us on the 7th April to celebrate these auspicious milestones and come and learn from a Master who has been awarded the title of Technical Director by Grand Master Hwang of the IUTF. Your Taekwon-Do journey can only benefit from such broad teaching and we encourage your attendance. Click: BOOK NOW…

Black Belt Pre-Grading 17th September 2017

Monday 18th September 2017

After a busy summer the September Pre-Grading was here before we knew it! We thought that the March Pre-Grading was our biggest, but we were so impressed to see almost 80 Fortitude Students coming to train and pregrade. We had over 50 students pre-grading for Black Belt and above on Sunday 17th September. Students were rigorously put through their paces, going over each pattern from Chon-Ji through to Choong Moo, nine patterns in total and Black Belts practiced up to nine further patterns dependant on their Dan... We brought with us our three new breaker board holders and every student was coached to understand the importance of power in Taekwon-Do and how to apply the 'Theory of Power' referred to in our training...the last hour of the four hour seminar was dedicated to students hoping to gain the opportunity to grade to black belt and above on Sunday 15th October. Students were carefully corrected throughout the seminar and coached by Master Hodson, Mrs Hodson and supported by Mrs Hansen and Mr Pitman to enable them to improve before they grade to Black Belt on 29th April 2017. The 4 hour seminar has been very well received with students enhancing their skills further and taking on board particular areas needed for practice. We wish all the students the very best of luck for the upcoming Belt Belt Grading and don't forget to keep asking for more from your Instructor, this is your time to absorb as much information as you can! We won't mind..:) "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, it not an act, but a habit" Aristotle Mrs Hodson…

FEBRUARY is FAMILY MONTH

Tuesday 7th February 2017

What's New for FEBRUARY! We have decided at Fortitude that FEBRUARY is FAMILY MONTH! We are starting a campaign with all our Instructors to take pictures in class of all their students who train as a family to help encourage more families to do the same. We have calculated that we have over 85 families who train weekly at Fortitude Academy sharing in the benefits of training together toward a common goal 'Black Belt'. Master Hodson and myself saw the benefits early on in our teaching careers when our first family joined in 2000. This impressed upon us the ultimate in Taekwon-Do training and started our journey to fulfil this for many more families including our own. When parents join their children in class, they both benefit in several ways. • The active routine provides "quality time" that they don't get at home or in sports where one party is just a spectator. • Children often see their parents in a new light. • They are more open to discussions about values and virtues. • Parents get to model the actions and attitudes they want their children to have. This makes a powerful impression on a child's developing persona, much better than lectures alone. • There is a special joy that comes from sharing trials with family members, in addition to the mental, physical, and emotional health rewards earned in the martial arts. • The old saying that "the family that kicks together sticks together" is true in many cases. That's because of the unique fellowship students enjoy while training, competing, and growing in knowledge and skill together. • Family members learn to encourage and rely on each other. This builds loyalty, respect, and gratitude. By working together in a social setting like Taekwon-Do class, good relationships with other individuals are made easier to create and maintain. Families in Taekwon-Do often become friends with other Taekwon-Do families. This opens the door to positive, lasting relationships that improve the quality of life for everyone involved. Martial arts have been shown to provide mental and physical health benefits like weight loss, muscle gain, stress relief, and self-confidence. Taekwon-Do training also reduces depression, improves circulation, and improves overall health of the body. Now more than ever, lots of parents, kids, and siblings are training together. This builds family unity and gives everyone the chance to teach and learn from each other. So are you that 'Mum' or 'Dad' watching your son or daughter train? Do you wonder if you could do it? Could you be a family equipped with practical self-defence? What you want for your children you could emulate in yourself....Well it's time to stop thinking and join in, we offer a 30 day trial, a family discount on joining fees and training fees. There are daytime classes in our full time Do-Jangs (East Grinstead and Tonbridge) and Family classes available in many of our locations go to www.tkd4u.co.uk to find your class. There is everything to gain from this adventure! Master and Mrs Hodson…

Master Hodson Seminar - 'Get your training back on track!'

Friday 27th January 2017

Saturday 21st January was the date of our first seminar of the year. The venue was the assembly hall at Sackville School East Grinstead, forty two students attended from several Fortitude schools, with a mix of grade and age from white belt to 2nd degree. Master Hodson VII took the seminar and was assisted by Mrs Hodson IV. This seminar was similar to our previous ones at this time of the year and is aptly regarded as the "Get your training back on track". Its a great one to attend if like most you enjoyed the festive end of year period, and would like to hit the ground running for the start of 2017. The 3 hrs where split between warm up - with many new warm up drills enjoyed by everybody, patterns practice, sparring drills and free sparring. Black belts focussed on their 3 main patterns, 2nd degrees enjoying extended time on the break down of techniques in Juche. Colour belts as well as patterns practice had the opportunity of extended time on the breakdown of basic movements. Any improvement in the basics increases better performance all round and it is where most of the gains are made for the student to progress. In the sparring drills section new drills where introduced utilising a feint move to open up the opponent. Free sparring was enjoyed by everyone as students were partnered with similar opponent either by height or weight. The 3 hours went by very quickly and students appreciated the stretching cool down as Master Hodson complimented them on their efforts and "great energy" making the seminar one to be positively remembered by all. David Hodson VII degree Fortitude Academy…
